Calcined Petroleum Coke

Calcined Petroleum Coke (CPC) is derived from the high-temperature pyrolysis treatment of Raw Petroleum Coke, which is a byproduct from the coker unit in crude oil refineries. The calcining process is conducted in rotary kilns where the raw coke is heated to temperatures exceeding 1200 degrees Celsius. This intense heat treatment removes volatile substances, moisture, and other impurities, resulting in a highly carbonaceous material known as Calcined Coke.

Calcined Petroleum Coke is a critical component in various industries, particularly for the production of anodes used in aluminum, steel, and titanium smelting. In the aluminum industry, CPC is used to produce anodes essential for the electrolytic extraction of aluminum from alumina. In steel production, CPC serves as a carbon additive and is used in the manufacturing of graphite electrodes. For titanium smelting, CPC acts as a reducing agent to extract pure titanium from its ores.

The calcination process enhances the quality of petroleum coke by increasing its carbon content, reducing the amount of volatile matter, and improving its electrical conductivity and strength. These improvements make Calcined Petroleum Coke an invaluable material, contributing to more efficient and high-quality production processes in the aluminum, steel, and titanium industries.

The primary use of Calcined petroleum coke is in the production of anodes used in aluminum smelting. Anodes act as conductors of electricity in the electrolytic cells that produce aluminum by the Hall-Héroult process. Calcined coke is also used in steel and titanium smelting industries.

The properties of calcined petroleum coke, such as high carbon content, low moisture content, and low volatile matter, make it suitable for various industrial applications where a high carbon content is desirable. The specific properties of the calcined coke can vary based on the source of the raw petroleum coke and the specific calcination process used.
